Description

The evaluation of user interfaces is a crucial aspect for the success of software products, as it enables a structured approach to iteratively build and improve the user experience to achieve the desired goals in terms of usability, complexity and aesthetics. Traditional evaluation methods demand significant resources in terms of time and/or human expertise. Automated evaluation methods overcome these constraints, and previous works involving various models from both traditional machine learning and recent deep learning approaches have shown promising results in evaluating user interfaces.

To make existing evaluation models more readily available, this thesis aims to create a web-based platform allowing to utilize established metrics & models for automatic evaluation of web user interfaces. The platform architecture must be able to process textual and visual inputs, allow the user to select the metrics that are computed, support concurrent execution of the models, optimize shared preprocessing tasks, visually represent the results as they become available, and should allow to reference to previous results via persistent URLs and to extend the platform with new metrics and models.

The objective of this thesis is the creation of a solution or the combination of existing techniques to solve the problem of facilitating the use of automatic web user interface assessment models through a web-based platform as described above. This comprises the analysis of the state of the art of UI assessment tools as well as the demonstration of the solution by implementation and a suitable experimental evaluation focusing on the usability and system performance of the assessment platform.
